In the Depth Series patterns, which normally flatten an image, are manipulated to appear to have volume. The result of this can look dramatic and confusing. In 2014 Sarah Jacobs was first hired to teach a course in 2-D Design. The lessons affected her artwork as much as her students'. Among other lessons she covered tricks artists can use to play with flatness and volume. These included the use of gradients (as seen in Ethospheres 11, 13, and 9), metric projections (Ethospheres 10 & 13), highlights and shadows (Ethosphere 7), overlapping and size changes to indicate distance (Ethosphere 14 and The Movement), and even the use of a mirror (Ethopshere 8).
